Rocking Base test

I have recently did a full test for the rocking base lounge set.

The base works well and it holds the user well. Velcro connections help to hold both pieces in place. But, this will be an item which will have restrictions for only pre sch kids 3-5 years old.
Estimated max weight limit of 30kg for the rocking base to function properly.

Packaging Design Development

My one thought over the process of making this packaging:

‘why must cardboard be used to package another cardboard?’

So i thought, i will not use another piece of cardboard for this packaging anymore as it actually defeats the purpose. Instead, i will use a roll of paper which too me a while to figure out a way to integrate this with the actual design without adding anything else.

*The actual prototype

Improvements made:
– a simpler straightforward packaging solution
– use of paper to wrap the entire 3 pieces vertically
– graphics to be printed on paper itself

rhi-sc
* an adjustment on the module design has to be made,
– but only for the main body part (the biggest part of all modules)
– on the slots part, a slot is made as an integrated handle
(when part is folded, the slots act as a handle)
(this will not affect the product usability)
– so, the paper will go through the handle slot and wrap around all the collapsed parts firmly (glued)

*All the modules flat-packed (super-imposed)

*Packaging graphics plan for highchair (front & back) with  the Instructions inside

to overcome:
– the fold/bending lines over the packaging on the point which are rigid
– too much treatment and die-cuts for the template
– the unnecessary use of bonding/connections like Velcro etc.
* the use of more cardboard for a temporary packaging solution (a one off part)

The first few drafts of packaging
– that uses cardboard and velcro with a handle, and holds a vertical & horizontal layoutproto-pack2

Rocking Base Experimentation

From the suggestions of the previous presentation on making modules kinetic, I have tried to come out with ideas on how to add a rocking base to my modules.
– Idea is not to redesign the whole module into a rocking chair or a rolling chair because this is no entirely my initial concept- this idea will only be an add on/ optional future plans for my design (the 2nd generation of cardblocks)
– I have brainstormed on how to make a detachable rocking base that is also made of
*pieces of cardboards that could be flatpacked
*easy to fix
*durable and strong
*has a leg rest

Here is my test video of the rocking base:

Packaging Design Development

draft-pkgdraft2-pkg
As discussed, it would be good to create a packaging that wraps around the entire edges of the parts. But, I have thoughts that that would make use of a lot of cardboard. Thus, people might ask about the wastage of material used for packaging.
A second use for the packaging might still be an optional idea which will be thought through still.
So, for this design i reduced the amount of cardboard used to the minimal that is capable of holding the crucial areas of the parts in place with an integrated cut for handle.
Thus, it will not look like as if the packaging is big piece of cardboard over a pack of cardboard.draft-pkg-photo-impose1*a photo-imposed visual of packaging

Notes from Previous Presentation

Notes from Faculty:
– The modules look abit static
(suggest/intro a 2nd generation of Cardblocks with kinetic features)
– Kinetic features like rocker/rollers on base .etc
– Have more options for colours and fabric textures
(this was thought of earlier but not implemented much, to limit consumer’s choices)
– Packaging lacks placement security (parts may fall off)

Personal notes:
– Develop an optional curved base that is removable (rocker chair)
this will have several safety issues and the product might not be as equally strong as before
– Develop a bigger packaging with an integrated carrying handle
i have tried to use  cardboard/craft paper to make the bag that wraps the parts but the folds support & handle part is too fragile and tears easily
– I will decide to do a catalog for more colours and fabric types, QR-coded on packaging
This will be on the webpage that will be created specially for Cardblocks

WEBPAGE will have
– Cardblocks Promotional Video
– uploaded videos of steps and instructions
– full catalog of additional materials (though samples will only focus on one type of material)
– tips on customizing product
– all other important info and features of Cardblocks
