1a) It is an exothermic process. This is because heating energy is released during the process.

b) It is an endothermic process. This is because heat energy is absorbed during the process.

c) It is an endothermic process. This is because heat energy is absorbed to melt ice to water.

 

2. In order to make a good explosion, large amount of heat energy has to be released during the explosion reaction. Hence, we want a high energy difference. Therefore, the bond strength of the reactants should be weaker than the bond strength of the products to produce a net negative energy difference.

 

3. Heat is the total energy of the movement of all molecules in one substance while temperature the average energy of molecules in substance.

When an ice cube melts, the temperature remains constant while heat is absorbed.

4a) The knocking characteristics of this gasoline is 98% isooctane and 2% heptane.

b) Merely knowing the octane number of the gasoline does not tell us whether or not it contains oxygenates. However,we do know that fuel with oxygenates have higher octane ratings, with common oxygenated fuel additives having octane ratings of over 100.
