Various Uses of Water

We use water for many reasons. However, we should always try to conserve this precious resource and use it wisely. Take a look below to see some examples of what we use water for!

Domestic

  • For drinking / making of beverages
  • Cooking
  • Keeping ourselves clean
  • Keeping the environment clean
  • Washing clothes
  • Putting out fire

Recreational

  • Water sports: Swimming, Water Polo, Canoe, Sailing, Synchronised Swimming
  • Water Light Shows
  • Gardening

Agriculture

  • Watering of crops

Health

  • Most oral medication is taken in with the help of the water.
  • Furthermore, most injections are diluted with water so as to achieve the suitable concentration of the medication that we require.
  • Water is also one of the main components in vaccines.

Electricity

  • Hydroelectric power (more applicable outside of Singapore)
  • Steam is used to turn the turbines which in turn drives generators in power plants.

Universal Solvent

  • The polarity of the water makes it a good solvent. By allowing a variety of substances to be dissolved in water, water becomes the main site for vital biochemical reactions to take place in.
  • Furthermore, biological molecules are also transported by water, making every life form dependent on water.

FIgure 4.1 Because Bruce Lee says so (n.d.).
