Chemical Concept of Carbon Dioxide

Carbon dioxide (chemical formula CO2) is a naturally occurring chemical compound is made up of a carbon atom covalently double bonded to two oxygen atoms. Carbon dioxide exists in Earth’s atmosphere as a trace gas at a concentration of about 0.04 percent (400 ppm) by volume. It is formed when carbon atom combust with oxygen atoms.

Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas as it absorb and emit infrared radiation, resulting in heat trapped in the atmosphere

Since carbon dioxide is form when carbon atoms react with oxygen atoms, the increasing trend of carbon emission (burning of fossil fuels etc ) will result in abundance of carbon dioxide when the carbon atoms from the emission reacts with oxygen in the atmosphere and because it has a long atmospheric lifetime (hundreds to thousands of years), carbon dioxide is thus the greatest concern amongst the greenhouse gases because it exerts a larger overall warming influence than all of the other gases combined.
