Application Exercise 6

  1. a Coal plants produce huge amounts of water vapour during the combustion process. Water vapour when cooled in the National Park will result in fog produced, reducing the visibility of the National Park.

Chemical process involved: CH4 + O2—> CO2 + 2H20

b) pH will be 6 because it is just 10 times more acidic than the natural pH which is 7.

2. All of the activities reducing electricity generation through power plants which will produce gases such as sulfur dioxide.

a. Hanging laundry will reduce use of the dryer to dry clothes.

b. Reduces dependence on private transport. Private transport increases volume of transport on the road and will cause production of gases that contribute to acid rain

c. Reduces electricity needed to generate the dishwashers and washing machines

d. Reduce power consumption by reducing heat loss from hot water heaters and pipes

e. Reduces emission of gases due to heavy container transport using planes and cargo ships

3.

Bases:

Sodium Hydroxide NaOH
Calcium hydroxide CA(OH)2
c. Ammonium hydroxide NH4OH
d. Magnesium hydroxide Mg(OH)2
Barium hydroxide BA(OH)2

Acids:

Hydrochloric acid

HCl

Sulfuric acid

H2SO4

Nitric acid

HNO3

Carbonic acid in soft drink

H2CO3
Phosphoric acid  H3PO4

b. Observable properties: Corrosive, colourless, changes colour of appropriate litmus paper

4. Acid rain may have less observable impact on Singapore but impacts are still there. Some consequences of acid rain in Singapore may be that streams in nature reserves may be more acidic in nature. As a result, the local biodiversity has been slowly wiped out.
