You Are What You Eat: INTRODUCTION

Food plays a ubiquitous role in our lives and in society. The phrase “you are what you eat” describes how what one eats affects his or her body, well-being and life in general. Adopting healthy and informed food choices is often the deciding factor between keeping in shape and having to deal with future health problems like obesity, diabetes and hypertension.

One has a personal responsibility to be accountable for his or her daily diet. To do so, it is important to be aware of the types of food to eat, in the right proportion and combination. A healthy diet should include the essential nutrients the body needs.

The six essential nutrients are classified into water, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals and vitamins. These nutrients help us to function in our daily lives. For example, carbohydrates are the main energy source for our brain, while proteins are largely responsible for the building and repair of body tissues.
