Positive Impacts

Renewable resources

Ethanol acts as an alternative source of energy to the scarce and rapidly depleting fossil fuels. Ethanol is primarily derived from corn. Corn and sugar cane are both renewable resources grown by domestic farmers

Increase in job production.

Ethanol production creates jobs in rural areas where employment opportunities are needed.

According to the Renewable Fuels Association, ethanol production in 2015 led to the addition of nearly 86,000 direct jobs across the country, $44 billion to the gross domestic product, and $24 billion in household income.

High octane rating

Ethanol has a higher octane rating than most petroleum, usually at 113 RON (Research Octane Number) and creates very few particulates. Hence, ethanol is more resistant to knocking and is able to undergo combustion more smoothly.

This results in lower energy loss, which aligns with Singapore’s vision of being a clean and green city.
