What are CFCs?

CFCs – CHLOROFLUOROCARBONS

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are nontoxic, nonflammable chemicals containing atoms of carbon, chlorine, and fluorine. They are used in the manufacture of aerosol sprays, blowing agents for foams and packing materials, as solvents, as well as refrigerants.

Relevant information with regards to CFCs :

  • Molecules made up of carbon, chloride and fluorine atoms
  • Organic Compound
  • Inert, non-toxic, non-flammable
  • Developed as a refrigerant replacing highly toxic ammonia or sulfur dioxide 
  • 850000 tons produced annually by 1985
  • Banned since 1996
