Application Exercise 4

1. The earth is not cooling rapidly due to the greenhouse effect. 300W/m2 may leave the earth’s surface but the atmosphere which has greenhouse gases which trap heat will absorb the heat from the earth’s surface, trapping it.

2. This statement is incorrect as global warming leads to extreme weather events such as extreme winters or summers over certain areas. This means that while the area that the man in the cartoon may be having an extreme cold wave, other areas may be experiencing droughts or heat waves. The mistake made by the man is to mistake that low local temperatures means that temperatures are low all over the world. Global warming refers to an increase in average world temperatures therefore, he should be looking at global(inclusive of every place) rather than local temperatures.

3. Radar is used to detect objects. It is supposed to work through pulses of radio waves which are sent out and reflected off objects. The reflected wave is then analysed after it bounces off any objects. In order for this to happen it requires long wavelengths but low frequency. In fact, radio waves have the longest wavelengths and lowest frequencies. The radar technology used in the World war failed because it had higher frequency than the radiowaves resulting in these waves (aka microwaves) rotating the particles

4. We believe that in the short term, air quality poses as the most serious problem as it can very quickly change within a day. The healthy may be let off more easily having problems such as slight breathing difficulties while the older and the unhealthy could experience asthma attacks and heart problems. However, air pollution can be relatively easily controlled by placing measures such as controls on car purchases which can reduce the amount of air pollutants in the air.  We believe that in the long term, global warming will pose the most serious problems as affects the weather which has far reaching implications on economies and pose serious social, political problems. For example one of the effects of global warming is an increase in temperatures which will cause sea levels to rise. In the case for low lying cities such as Venice, this will be catastrophic as it is likely that the entire city will be completely inundated. This will implicate the economic activities in Venice as well as the people living there. Another implication of global warming which is very serious will be its effects on food sources. An increase in global temperatures or erratic weather patterns will spell trouble for food sources as they are unable to survive.
